The High Court has directed the superintendent of the Rajshahi Jail to arrange the marriage of a man sentenced to life for rape and the victim at the prison gate.

The court also ordered the jail authorities to submit a progress report within 30 days about the marriage.

The High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order after both sides agreed to the marriage on Thursday during the hearing of a bail petition filed by the accused, reports Bangla Tribune.

Advocate SM Shahed Chowdhury represented the accused while Deputy Attorney General Md Sarwar Hossain Bappi stood for the state.

According to the case statement, the accused Dilip Khalko, son of Sitanath Khalko of Godagari upazila in Rajshahi, had an affair with one of his close relatives. He had developed a physical relationship with her by promising to marry her. When the victim got pregnant, Dilip refused to marry her.

On October 23, 2011, the victim went to a local hospital for a physical examination. She filed a case against Dilip on October 25, 2011 with Godagari police station.

On January 29, 2012, charges were framed against the accused in the case. Following the trial, on June 12, 2012, the court sentenced Dilip Khalko to life imprisonment and a fine of Tk50,000.

Dilip has been in prison since the verdict.

However, Dilip filed a bail petition recently. During the hearing, Dilip’s lawyer said that the bail was necessary because the victim and the convict agreed to marry.
