A woman who was reported missing six days ago has been found dead and buried beneath her in-law’s house in Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar.
The deceased Afroza was reported missing on October 12 by her mother-in-law in Uttar Nalbila village of Kalarmarchhara union of the upazila, claims her father Ishaq.
After collecting information from various family sources, officials from Maheshkhali police station conducted a drive at the village on Saturday, police sources said.
“Around 11pm, our officials dug out Afroza’s body from beneath her in-law’s house,” said Md Abdul Hye, officer-in-charge of the police station.
“We sent the body to Sadar Hospital for autopsy. The deceased’s husband and all of her in-laws have fled the area,” added the OC.
According to local sources, Afroza and her husband Rakib Hasan Bappi, a part-time lecturer at Badarkhali College, had been getting into regular disputes since they were married a year ago.
A case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act had even been filed after one such dispute and it was later settled by both parties.
On October 12, Afroza’s mother-in-law informed her family that she had gone missing and the family then informed police. Subsequently, law enforcement agencies began drives to find her.
Police became suspicious when husband Bappi suddenly fled the area. The investigation into his possible involvement led to the discovery of Afroza’s body.
