In the name of expansion and construction of a road at Banaripara municipal area, the memorial monument of veteran revolutionary Kumud Bihari Guhathakurta (Kumud da), was demolished on Wednesday. He was the leader of the anti-British and anti-Pakistan movement and an organizer of the 1971 liberation war.
However, Banaripara Upazila Nirbahi Officer UNO Sheikh Abdullah Sadid claimed that the memorial was not completely demolished, but partly broken.
He said that the workers accidentally broke down the boundary wall of the memorial while trying to expand the road.
“Informed, we visited the place and warned the workers not to damage the spot.”
He assured that to enhance the beauty, the authorities would take a special project to reconstruct the memorial with a shed on top of it.
Former president of Banaripara Muktijoddha Sangsad Beni Lal Das gupta said that he witnessed the demolition of the boundary wall of Muktijoddha Sangsad on Tuesday and also the demolition of the memorial monument of the revolutionary Kumud Bihari Guhathakurata on Wednesday.
Local AL lawmaker Shah Alam claimed the workers had broken the monument accidently. “We will reconstruct the memorial with a more beautiful design here so that people can visit that.” he added.
Kumud Bihari Guhathakurta's relative, development organizer Dr. Meghna Guhathakurta said, we strongly condemn this incident. Those who did this had no transparency. We want to restore the traditional and historical monument.
Kumud Bihari was in jail for around 25 years because of his role in the revolution during the British and Pakistani period.
He was the cousin of Jyotirmoy Guhathakurata, a martyred intellectual and professor at Dhaka University.
When Kumud Bihari died on April 28, 1974, a memorial was erected at Banaripara municipal area on a 6 decimal land for preserving his memory.
