A bridge has collapsed, dropping a truck full of sand into the river in Tangail.

The bridge, named Bailey bridge, is located in the Nakachim area of the Basail-Tangail road and sits atop the Langulia river.

The incident took place around 11pm on Sunday, seriously injuring the truck helper and closing off the road to all vehicles.

Two units of Basail and Tangail Fire Service conducted rescue operations over the incident.

Police and locals said the truck was heading towards Basail from Tangail when it boarded the bridge. The load tilted part of the bridge downwards, causing the truck to fall into the river.

Upon receiving news of the incident, two units of Basail and Tangail Fire Service rushed to the scene and started the rescue operation. Fire service personnel were able to rescue the helper in critical condition. He was rushed to Tangail General Hospital for immediate medical attention.

Basail police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Harunur Rashid said additional police units had to be deployed at the spot to deal with a crowd that was curious to witness what was happening.

Regarding the incident, Basail Upazila Parishad Chairman Kazi Alid Islam said: “Millions of people from Basail, Sakhipur and Bhaluka upazilas pass through Bailey Bridge. Attempts are being made to remove the truck as soon as possible. Hopefully the traffic will return to normal soon.”
