Police arrested a lawyer on charges of raping a transgender person in Barisal on Sunday.
The arrested, AKM Shamsul Haque, 56, is an advocate practising at the Barisal District Court and a member of the Lawyers’ Association of Barisal.
He reportedly raped a 24-year-old transgender person on multiple occasions from February 5 to October 2 this year, the case statement says.

Upon the filing of the case by the rape survivor, police arrested the lawyer in the early hours of Sunday, confirmed Sub-inspector SI Fazlul Haque.
He said: “After we presented him before the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Maruf Ahmed, the court sent him to jail, denying his bail petition.”
