Police on Saturday arrested a man for allegedly raping his 12-year-old mentally challenged niece in Ashuganj upazila of Brahmanbaria.
The incident of rape took place in Panchbita village of Ashuganj upazila on Friday night.
The suspect, one Delwar, was arrested after the victim’s family informed police of the matter. Delwar is a cousin of the girl’s mother.
According to the girl's family, the girl's mother sent her to deliver some vegetables to a neighbour's house when Delwar raped her after abducting her to a deserted place. When the girl managed to scream during the incident, Delwar escaped and locals brought her home.

The girl’s family said village leaders had pressured them to go for mediation but they refused and informed the police.
Ashuganj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC), Jabed Mahmud, said: "We have already asked the girl's family to file a case. The girl has been admitted to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital for medical tests."
