Bandarban’s Nafakhum off limits to tourists

In the last six years, 11 tourists have been killed and at least 200 injured after falling into the Nafakhum waterfalls

Administrators have prohibited tourists from visiting the Nafakhum tourist spot in Thanchi Upazila of Bandarban district in order to avoid accidents.

The decision follows the death of a tourist at the spot a few days ago. 

Heavy rains, rising water levels in the Sangu River, and the arrival of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on October 14 in the upazila have also affected the decision.

However, the administration said that tourists can travel to Remakri union in Thanchi if they want.

On October 3, Jakarul Islam Kanan from Dhaka was swept away by a strong current while bathing in the Nafakhum waterfalls. Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) and police recovered his body.  

In the last six years, 11 tourists have been killed and at least 200 injured after falling into the Nafakhum waterfalls, one of the prime tourist spots of Thanchi upazila.

Thanchi Upazila Executive Officer Md Ariful Islam Mridul said: "Tourists have been discouraged from traveling to Nafakhum. If the situation improves, we will open the spot for tourists again."
