Husband burnt his wife’s face by throwing a flammable material in Godagari upazila of Rajshahi.
The incident took place at Raninagar village of the upazila around 3:30am on Friday. The seriously injured housewife was admitted to the burn unit of Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) Hospital around 5am.
The injured housewife's name is Mahbuba Khatun, 15, and her husband’s name is Murad Ali. He is a truck helper from Kumarpur village of Godagari.
About a year and a half ago, Murad and Mahbuba got married following a love affair. But for the last few months they were having recurring quarrels. As such, for the last four months Mahbuba was staying at her father's house in Raninagar village.
Godagari Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khairul Islam said that although they got married after falling in love, Mahbuba did not want to live with Murad anymore. So, she stayed at her father's house.
In the early hours of Friday, Mahbuba was sleeping in the same room as her mother and brother when a flammable substance was thrown on Mahbuba’s face. Only she was injured and taken to the hospital.
The OC said Mahbuba and her mother saw Murad fleeing through the window. He is currently on the run and police are trying to arrest him.
The OC said: "We think acid has been thrown on her, but we cannot say for sure. I can only say for sure that a flammable substance was thrown on her face.
“Legal action is being taken in this regard.”
RMC Hospital burn unit chief Dr Afroza Nazneen said the left side of Mahbub's face was completely burnt by the flammable substance. In addition, her neck and left elbow were also burnt.
“The burn wounds look like acid has been thrown. However, it cannot be confirmed right now without clinical examination,” he said.
