MC College Gang Rape: Mahfuzur, Tarek put on 5-day remand

Eight out of the nine accused have been arrested so far

A Sylhet court granted police five days for questioning the prime accused Mahfuzur Rahman and his alleged accomplice Tarek Ahmad each in the MC College gang rape case.

The duo was produced before the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Abul Kashem Wednesday afternoon.

The investigating officer in the case appealed for a seven-day remand for questioning the accused, but the court granted five days.

Assistant Police Commissioner Amullo Kumar Chowdhury confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

Mahfuzur was arrested by Kanaipur police from Haripur area of Jaintiapur upazila at 11:30pm on Monday. Later, he was handed over to Sylhet Metropolitan police’s Shahporan police station on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Tarek was detained by RAB from Derai upazila Tuesday night. Later, he was handed over to Sylhet Metropolitan police’s Shahporan police station Wednesday.

Previously on Friday, a woman along with her husband was visiting the college campus in Sylhet’s Tilagarh. At 9:30pm in the night, their car was intercepted by a group of youths.

They forcefully dragged the woman’s husband out of the car and bound him down near the hostel, before raping her inside the car, said Jyotirmoy Sarker, additional deputy commissioner (media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP).

The husband filed a case in this incident, against nine people while identifying six Chhatra League members.

The accused have been identified as — MC College Chhatra League leader Saifur Rahman, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Rony, Tarek Ahmad, Arjun Laskar, Robiul Islam, and Mahfuzur Rahman.

Police also arrested Rajan and Ainuddin who were unnamed in the case.

Eight out of the nine accused have been arrested so far.
