The normal life of Rangpur has come to a halt following the persistent heavy rainfall for the last 12 hours, the most the municipality has seen in the last 60 years.

Most parts of the district, including the roads and dwelling houses of at least 60 wards have become submerged by the rainwater, leaving 1,00,000 people marooned in the metropolitan area.

According to the Rangpur Met Office,  the district experienced 433 mm rainfall in the last 12 hours from 10pm on Saturday to 10am on Sunday, which is a record in the last 60 years.

The inclement weather and rainfall may last for two more days, it added.

At least 5,00,000 lakh people are waterlogged in the knee to waist-deep water after the sudden flood hit the district Saturday to Monday.

On a field visit, firefighters were seen working to rescue marooned people since Sunday morning.

Most of the streets in the low-lying areas in Rangpur city went under 3-4 feet water, the residents said.

Water Development Board sources said the main water drainage path Shyama Sundari Canal was submerged which caused the water-logging.

Meanwhile, the River Teesta started to rise again, causing a flash flood in the low-lying areas.

The river is flowing above the danger level at Dalia and Kaunia point in the district.
