MC College Gang Rape: Prime suspect among two arrested

The incident took place on Friday night when the victim was visiting the place with her husband

Police have arrested two people, including the prime suspect, over the gang rape of a woman on the hostel premises of Sylhet’s Murari Chand (MC) College.

Key accused M Saifur Rahman was nabbed from the bordering Chhatak in the northeastern district of Sunamganj early on Sunday, our correspondent Himadri Shekhor Bhadra reported citing sources at the local police.

On the same day, the second suspect Arjun Laskar -- named as the fourth accused in the case -- was apprehended from a bordering village in Habignaj’s Madhabpur Upazila, the local police station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Iqbal Hossain told Dhaka Tribune.

The Detective Branch (DB) made the arrest, he said before adding: “"We suspect he was trying to cross the border to India. The DB took him to Sylhet."

Sources said a group of Chhatra League men confined the woman's husband in a room and took the woman inside a car where she was gang-raped.

Police rescued the couple from the hostel premises and admitted the woman to the One Stop Crisis Centre of Sylhet’s Osmani Medical College Hospital on Friday around 10:30pm.

Following the incident, the woman’s husband filed a case at Shah Paran police station against eight to nine people citing six names, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Kayum Chowdhury.

The four others named in the case are Shah Mahbuur Rahman Rony, Tarek Ahmad, Robiul Islam, and Mahfuzur Rahman.

All of them have been staying at the hostel although the institution and its dormitory were closed for months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
