Abandoned by sons, 85-year-old woman takes refuge underneath boat

‘My mother doesn’t get along with my wife so what can I do?’ says Deb Kundu

Having been abandoned by her sons, an 85-year-old woman has been living a miserable life for the last 12 days underneath a boat kept at Sultan Ghat in Narail.

She has been depending on the locals for food; she only gets sustenance when the residents of the area give her something to eat.

The heart-wrenching story came to the notice of the deputy commissioner (DC) of Narail after it went viral on social media.

DC Anjuman Ara got 85-year-old Maya Rani Kundu admitted to the Sadar hospital on Friday afternoon.

According to locals, Maya has two sons — Deb Kundu, 50, and Uttam Kundu, 40. After Uttam got married a few years ago, Deb started looking after her.

But around one and a half years ago, Deb started misbehaving with his mother, refused to feed her, keep her at his house, and eventually threw her out. Amit Saha, a resident of the area, allowed the 85-year-old woman to stay at his house for a few months after that.

Maya, in a quavering voice, said her son and her daughter-in-law kicked her out of the house about one and a half years ago.

She continued: “I had 5 decimals of land but my son Deb sold it. Then their [son and his wife] behaviour towards me became very bad and they threw me out of the house.

“I stayed here and there for some time, but now I don’t have a place to stay. I live on whatever people give me.”

Asked about the matter, Maya’s son Deb said: “My mother doesn’t get along with my wife so what can I do?”

DC Anjuman said: “The old woman was admitted to the Sadar hospital soon after the matter came to our notice. She has been given clothes and food.”

“The district administration will take care of her until she is handed over to her sons,” she added.
