Update : 21 Sep 2020, 04:11 PM

A lighter vessel laden with 1,250 tons of clinker capsized off Bhasan Char coast in the Bay of Bengal on Monday.

The lighter vessel “MV Titu-19” owned by Abul Khair Group was heading for Munshiganj from the outer anchorage of Chittagong port.

Mohammad Salim, deputy director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), told Dhaka Tribune that the vessel partially capsized around 11am off Bhasan Char coast in the Bay of Bengal.

“The vessel developed cracks in its hull due to strong currents in the Bay. All the 13 crew onboard were rescued by another lighter vessel belonging to the same owner,” said the BIWTA official.
