Minor boy brutally beaten for supposedly stealing fruit

An 11 year old boy was hacked and beaten in Pirojpur, when the owner of a pomelo tree accused him of stealing his fruit.

The victim, Hamim Tarafdar, is a sixth grader in Najirpur upazila of Pirojpur. He received treatment at the upazila hospital after the incident on Thursday.

Dr Ashes Pratim Roy, of Najirpur Upazila Health Complex said the child was hacked with a sharp object.

The victim's father, Shahedul Tarafdar, said Hamim with five other friends ate a pomelo after taking it from his grandmother's tree on Tuesday. Jafar Sheikh, owner of a pomelo tree  in the same area thought that Hamim ate the fruit from his tree.

"On Thursday, when my son was bathing in a river near our home, Jafar called him out of the water and brutally beat him, tying him to a mahogany tree. He then hacked him and left him there thinking he was dead, Shahedul continued.

"After learning about the condition of my boy from a local child, I took him to a hospital."

The accused aggressor, Jafar Sheikh, said the boy stole pomelo from his tree. "When I asked him about the incident, he punched me so I hit him on his head with a stick. The boy's family assaulted me after that."

Najirpur police station Officer-in-Charge, Md Munirul Islam Munir, on Thursday said the incident is yet to be reported to him and he would look into the matter.
