A protest against the alleged high-handedness of Anas Madani continued for the second day on Thursday at the Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam, popularly known as Hathazari Madrasa in Chittagong.

In the wake of raging protests of the students, the Shura Committee (highest decision-making body) of the educational institution held an emergency meeting on Wednesday night and decided to relieve Anas Madani of his duties at the madrasa.

Anas Madani is the eldest son of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh chief Shah Ahmed Shafi and had been serving as the publicity secretary of the radical Islamist platform and the assistant director of the age-old madrasa.

The Hefazat leader said Shafi signed the expulsion papers under duress.

“As you know, indiscipline will bring no good. A group of outsiders are creating instability at the institution,” the Hefazat leader added.

Meanwhile, the protesting students attack and beat Hefazat-e-Islam Joint Secretary General Mainuddin Ruhi at Hathazari Madrasa on Wednesday.

Mainuddin is now undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

Previously on Wednesday, several hundred students of Hathazari Madrasa erupted in protest to press home their six-point demand, including the expulsion of Anas Madani.

The other demands include reinstating three teachers of the madrasa terminated by Anas, terminating all the unqualified teachers recruited by Anas, stopping torture-harassment on the students, appointing a skilled rector for the madrasa due to the advanced age of Shafi and removing the controversial Shura Committee members.

The protesting students also went on a rampage and vandalized some rooms of the madrasa.

The violent protest is a sequel to the rift between Hefazat Secretary-General Junayed Babunagari and Anas Madani.

The schism surfaced when Babunagari was removed from the post of assistant director of the madrasa in June of this year.

Last reported, a tense situation is prevailing as the students are continuing to stage protests padlocking the entrance of the madrasa.

Additional police have been deployed to avert any untoward incident.

Around 7,000 students study in the madrasa. Shafi is the rector of Hathazari Madrasa. He is also the chairman of Befaqul Madarisil Arabia Bangladesh.
