Rabiul Islam, whom the police say is the prime suspect in the attack on Wahida Khanam, upazila nirbahi officer of Ghoraghat upazila, has been put on a fresh remand.
He reportedly confessed to his involvement over the break-in at the government official’s residence in Dinajpur before the Detective Branch of Police (DB) but changed his testimony when brought on to the court, confirmed Investigation Officer of the case, Imam Zafar.
Following a six-day remand, police produced Rabiul before the court of Judicial Magistrate Anjuman in Dinajpur on Thursday morning.
As he refused to give a confessional statement to the magistrate, investigators pleaded for a seven-day-remand, when they were granted three days, said Court Inspector Israil Hossain.
On September 3, assailants attacked the official residence of Ghoraghat UNO Wahida Khanam. They first tied up the doorman and broke in through the ventilators at the back of the house.
The attackers hacked Wahida indiscriminately, leaving her with critical head injuries, and went on to attack her father Ali Sheikh, 70, who rushed in to save her.
The father and daughter were taken to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital. Later, the UNO was airlifted from Rangpur to the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Dhaka by a Bangladesh Air Force helicopter.
Doctors say Wahida's condition is stable and she has been kept in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) at the hospital.
