A court in Dhaka has sentenced six people to death for their direct involvement in killing a couple in a bid to grab their land property in Sadar upazila of Tangail three years back.
The Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka Judge Abu Zafar Md Kamruzzaman passed the sentence in presence of the six accused on Sunday afternoon, confirmed a prosecution lawyer.
The convicts are Swapon Kumar Das, Zahidul Islam, Forhad, Moniruzzaman Bhuiyan, Monzurul Islam and Shayan Mia.
According to the case statement, Swapon, who is a step-brother of victim Anil Kumar Das, made a plan to forcefully take Anil's signature on a legal deed to grab the land property in connivance with the other five accused.
When failed, on July 26, 2017, the six accused killed Anil Kumar Das and his wife and hid the two bodies in a septic tank of the victims' house.
After being informed, police recovered the bodies the next day and a case was filed by the victims' son Nirmal Kumar Das with Tangail police station over the double murder on the same day.
On September 17 of 2018, police submitted a charge sheet to the court pressing charges against the six accused in the case.
The court on August 7 last year framed charges against the six accused. Twenty-seven prosecution witnesses out of 35 so far gave their depositions in the case.
Nirmal, the plaintiff of the case said he is satisfied with the verdict and expect quick enforcement of the death penalty.
