Clash at Kathalbari Ferry Ghat: Four injured, over 300 vehicles stranded

The staff members of the ferry claimed they could not take more vehicles due to the poor navigability

At least four people have been injured in a clash between the staff members of a ferry and transportation workers at the Kathalbari Ghat river terminal.

Over 300 vehicles including trucks and passenger buses were stranded at the terminal as the ferry services were suspended after the clash on Sunday afternoon, sources confirmed.

The crossing at the river terminal was suspended for the last nine days due to the poor navigability of the river, sources said.

However, the ferry services resumed on Saturday operating on a limited scale.

Transportation workers --who were stranded with their vehicles at the port for the last couple of days-- asked the staff of a ferry to permit at least three of their vehicles to pass through the terminal.

But the ferry authorities agreed to take only one which left the transport workers agitated, and a clash broke out injuring four people, confirmed Inspector Md Monirul Islam, an on-duty policeman at the terminal.

The staff of the ferry claimed they could not take more vehicles due to poor navigability, the police officer said.

“We suspended the ferry operations again considering the problems associated with it. We will resume the operation after the navigability of Doob Char improves,” said Abdul Alim, manager of the river terminal from Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC).
