Police arrested two people, accused in a case filed for gang-raping a teeager, from a community arbitration in Shahrasti upazila of Chandpur on Saturday.
The accused were identified as Alamgir Hasan, an auto-rickshaw driver by occupation, and Rakib Hossain, 18.
According to the case statement, the teenager had an affair with Alamgir. Later after they broke up, the girl got involved in a relationship with Alamgir's friend Rakib.
On August 13, Rakib asked the girl to meet him in Unkila village under Raysree North Union of Shahrasti, where Alamgir had been waiting, without the girl's knowledge. Afterwards, the two raped her and left the place. On the same day, another man Shafiqul Islam, a friend of the accused persons, groped her on her way home, says the case filed by the girl at Shahrasti police station.
The police station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shah Alam said: "The Raysree North Union Parishad (UP) chairman arranged a community arbitration to solve the matter. But I was not informed about this. When I learned about it from some locals, I told the chairman that 'they are accused in a filed rape case, if they escape you will be in trouble.'
"Then we went to the arbitration spot and arrested the accused duo. The girl has been sent to Chandpur General Hospital for forensic tests."
Raysree North UP Chairman Selim Patwari Liton said: "The incident took place on August 13, but I learned about the incident on August 21. The accused persons were not in the locality. I have forced their parents and brought them to our area. Then I handed them over to the police after informing the Upazila Nirbahi Officer.”
