An elderly man who was kicked out from his own home by his son is now seeking justice for the injustice he suffered in Haripur, Thakurgaon.

Abdul Rahim, a day labourer, who lost his job in the midst of the pandemic, was allegedly forced out on the streets by his son, Shafirul, when Rahim sold off a pet goat to cover expenses.

Not only was Shafirul thrown out of his own house, the poor man alleged, but his son also took all the money he earned from the sale of the goat on Friday.

Abdul Rahim, who sought refuge at his nephew’s place, said: “When I asked my son to spare some money for my daily expenses, he physically assaulted me and kicked me out of my house on Friday.”

Abdul said he has filed a written complaint with the UNO’s office seeking justice for his son’s inhumane behaviour towards him. He did not receive any feedback thus far till the filing of this report on Sunday.

Contacted, the UNO of Haripur upazila, said he has sent strong directives to the Haripur police station to take immediate action regarding the matter.

However, Haripur police station OC Amiruzzaman denied being informed of the incident and said: “I didn’t receive any such complaint yet. I ask the concerned authorities to send the old man to us so that we can take action and secure justice for the man.”

Pointing out the importance of taking care of the elderly amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Khalilur Rahman, president of Probin Hitoishi Sangha of Thakurgaon, said: “We all should lend a hand to senior citizens as they are the worst-hit population in the pandemic in every respect.”

He asked the government for social and legal reform so that the elderly population of the country do not face this kind of incident which is pretty common in Bangladesh.
