The Jamuna River has been receding for the last few days, triggering erosion due to which a 50-metre stretch of river bank protection embankment at Dhekuria area of Sirajganj's Kazipur upazila has gone into the river on Saturday.

Confirming the incident, Executive Engineer Md Shafikul Islam, of the Water Development Board, said around nine kilometre river protection works (including the 50-metre stretch) was completed about eight years ago spending Tk425 crore. "For now temporary measures have been taken to protect the river bank. Durable and effective measures would be taken after planning in the next dry season."

The local authorities are currently dumping geo-bags at  the damaged embankment.

Kazipur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Zahid Hasan on Saturday morning said: "A woman's house has gone into the riverbed. She will be rehabilitated. Four to five families were evacuated to safety and locals are dumping geo-bags in heavy showers since morning."

The Jamuna has been flowing 10cm below the danger mark at Sirajganj Zila point until Saturday morning, according to sources from the WDB.
