A clinic owner was arrested on Thursday, after he was accused in a case filed for allegedly attempting to rape a woman who sought her sister's treatment in Wazirpur upazila of Barishal.
On the same day, the arrested Rezaul Karim, owner of Mayer Doa Clinic at Satla area of the upazila, was produced before a court, which rejected his bail plea and sent him to jail.
Wazirpur police station OC Ziaul Hasan confirmed the matter.
According to the case filed by the woman, Rezaul has been making inappropriate proposals to the woman several times over the phone since she had admitted her elder sister to the clinic for throat and mouth infection on August 11.
On Sunday, Rezaul attempted to rape the woman when she came to his chamber to discuss her sister's treatment.
Barisal Civil Surgeon Dr Monowar Hossain said Rezaul is a fraud. “He has no license for medical practice and his clinic is illegal. We requested the administration and law enforcing agencies several times to take action against him. But he managed to avoid legal action using political connection.”
Dr AKM Shamsuddin, former upazila health and family planning officer, who retired seven months ago, said: "We submitted reports against Rezaul's medical practice and his illegal clinic thrice. But he was able to persuade local political leaders and created a pressure, which prevented legal action against him."
