Mehedi Hasan Roni, who died in the Beirut blast, was talking to his family over the phone when the explosion happened.
Mehedi’s father Tajul Islam said he and his wife, Inara Begum, were talking to their son on the phone when they heard a loud noise of the explosion. The call connection broke down immediately. Later, a relative informed them that there was an explosion and Mehedi died in it.
The family broke down into tears and started mourning after receiving the news on Tuesday.
Tajul Islam said he sold his farming lands to send his eldest son abroad. He is in shock after receiving the news of his death. He pleaded to the government to bring back the body to Bangladesh.
Mehedi Hasan Roni, 25, from Bhadeshwara village under Machihata union of Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila, migrated to Lebanon on March 9, 2014, to restore his family’s prosperity. He did not come back home after that and was working as a salesman in a shopping mall in Beirut.
He was supposed to come back for Eid this year but could not do so due to the ongoing global pandemic.
Mehedi’s younger sister Jasmine Akhter Happy said he was the sole breadwinner and the family has now become helpless on his death.

Relatives and locals gathered at Mehedi’s house after receiving the news of his death, Al Aminul Haque Pavel, chairman of Machihata Union Parishad, was present there and said he will provide all kinds of support to bring back Mehedi’s body.
He also announced a financial aid of Tk10,000 to be given to the family on behalf of Bhadeshwara Dakshin Para Humanitarian Organization.
Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Pankaj Barua also visited Mehedi’s place. He consoled the family and announced to immediately provide an aid of Tk20,000.
Moreover, he said he will talk to Deputy Commissioner Hayat Ud Daulakhan and local Member of Parliament (MP) RAM Ubaidul Moktadir Chowdhury to bring the body back home.
On Tuesday, four Bangladeshi nationals were killed and around 100 more, including 21 members of the Bangladesh Navy, were injured in two massive explosions that rocked the port of Lebanese capital Beirut.
