A 15-year-old boy has been killed in a scuffle between two groups over throwing sand at each other at Meghna river in Narsingdi.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening near the Sheikh Hasina Bridge of Sadar upazila of the district.

The deceased was identified as Anik, a tenth grader at Satirpara KK Institute and son of Shahidullah Miah, a resident Satirpara in the town.

Two groups of adolescent boys had organised cruises on the Meghna River following the celebrations of Eid-ul-Azha, said Sabuj Miah, uncle of the deceased.

The boys locked into a scuffle over throwing sand at each other. Anik was hit with a piece of wood during the scuffle and immediately fell into the river around 6pm, added Sabuj.

The body was recovered and sent to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital morgue for a post mortem, confirmed Narsingdi model police station sources.

A video shared on Facebook shows the scuffle in which the two groups stopped their respective boats and attacked each other with sticks. The victim was also seen falling into the river after  being beaten by an unidentified youth.

Police, however, are probing whether the video is actually related to the incident.

No cases were filed regarding the incident but we are investigating the incident, said Sadar Model police station OC Biplob Kumar Dutta.
