30 shops gutted, 5 injured in Chandpur market fire

The injured were hospitalized and the traders’ association said they would bear the cost of their treatment

At least 30 shops were gutted and 5 people injured after a fire broke out at Hajiganj market in Chandpur in the early hours of Monday.

Ashraful Alam Chowdhury, president of Hajiganj Bazar Baybshaie Shamitee (Hajiganj Market Traders' Association) said the 30 partially or completely incinerated infrastructures include pharmacies, a bamboo furniture shop, grocery shops and a two-storey shop.

Md Farid Ahmed, deputy assistant director of Chandpur East fire service station said six fire service units from Hajiganj, Kachua, Shahrasti and Chandpur  Sadar upazilas  doused the fire after an effort of 3.5 hours. "The total damage (financial) can be determined after an investigation into the matter."

The injured were hospitalized and the traders’ association said they would bear the cost of their treatment, sources said.

Hajiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Baishakhi Barua said a list of shop owners would be made who had to incur loss in the fire and financial support would be provided to them from the district administration.

Expressing regret about the incident, Bir Uttam Major Rafiqul Islam, lawmaker from Chandpur-5 constituency said as much as government assistance would be provided to the businessmen who have sustained loss.
