7 killed in road crash in 3 districts

A head-on collision between a bus and pickup van left three people including the pickup van driver dead on the spot in Dhamrai upazila of Dhaka district.

At least seven people including three of a family were killed in road accidents in Nilphamari, Chapainawabganj and Dhaka’s Dhamrai. 

In Nilphamari, three members of the same family were met with tragic fates as they were killed in a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a night coach in Kishoreganj upazila.

The motorcycle driven by Liton Miya, 30, was carrying his wife Ruma Begum, 24, their four-year-old son Rahim and his sister-in-law Aduri Begum, 17, when the incident took place on the road in front of the Palli Bidyut Samiti office near the upazila town at around 8:30 pm on Sunday.

Kishoreganj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Harun-ur-Rashid confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

Kishoreganj police OC Harun-ur-Rashid said: “Liton Miya miraculously survived but the horrific accident left his wife, son and sister-in-law dead on the spot.” 

Liton Miya has been admitted to the Upazila Health Complex, he added.

Police quoting locals said Liton Miya was taking his wife, son, and sister-in-law to his wife’s uncle’s house in Putimari union after visiting his father-in-law Ahad Ali in of Ranchandi union in Kishoreganj upazila when the collision took place between their motorcycle and the night coach. 

“The bodies were recovered and the night coach was seized. However, the driver and his assistant managed to escape. Preparations are underway to file a case in this regard,” he added.

Four others killed in Dhamrai, C’nawabganj

A head-on collision between a bus and pickup van left three people including the pickup van driver dead on the spot in Dhamrai upazila of Dhaka district.

One the deceased was identified as Anwar Hossain, 26, a passenger onboard the pickup van. The others including the pickup van driver could not be identified immediately.

The incident took place on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Bathuli area under Dhamrai at around 8am on Monday morning.

Manikganj’s Golra Highway police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monirul Islam said: “The pickup van from Manikganj collided head-on with a bus coming in from the opposite direction on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway, killing the pickup van driver and two others riding with him in the front.”

The bus was seized but its driver and his assistant have managed to flee the scene. 

“Police are trying to arrest the bus driver and his assistant,” added the OC.

Meanwhile, in Chapainawabganj, a primary school teacher was killed in a road accident in the central bus terminal area Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as Golam Sarwar Kawnain, 60, of Swarupnagar in Chapainawabganj town. He was the headmaster of Chapainawabganj Municipality Government Primary School.

Police and eyewitnesses said the accident occurred around 8.30am when a bus hit Sarwar’s motorcycle in the area, leaving him seriously injured.

He was rushed to the Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station Md. Mozaffar Hossain confirmed this saying that the driver fled away but police detained the bus.
