A suspected smuggler has been shot dead by the Border Guard Bangladesh officials in Monunodi Char area of Kulaura upazila, Moulvibazar.
The incident took place in the early hours of Thursday.
The deceased, Badrul Islam, 19, was a college student and as his institution closed for Covid-19 lockdown, the local smuggling group was using him to operate their illegal activities along the border, said Moniruzzaman Helal, local UP member.
The youth was with a smuggling gang of 30-35 men, and when caught by the BGB officials, they tried to take the two sacks of Nasir Bidi from the official, said Subedar Md Abdul Kadir, company commander of 46 Alinagar BGB Camp.
“When the smugglers attacked us to loot the sacks, we fired in retaliation. Afterwards, we found the bullet-ridden body of the deceased,” added the BGB official.
