A woman and her husband--both of whom had crossed over to India, along the Mirgar border in Panchagarh-- were forced to jump into a river, and the latter went missing after they were reportedly chased by some Indian locals with sharp weapons.
The woman, Saheda Begum, 38, who was rescued from the Karatoya River by the locals on Tuesday, said she and her husband Kamalesh, 42, went along the Indian border to cut grass.
As they went a little far, the Indians living beside the border chased them and they jumped into the river to seek refuge from the attack. Since then Kamalesh has gone missing.
The locals said although officials from the Fire Service and Civil Defence arrived at the place, they did not start the rescue operation.
Confirming the incident, Niranjan Sarker, station officer of Fire Service, said: “We couldn’t start the operation because the area is under the Indian border.”
Contacted, Lt Col Khandaker Anisur Rahman, commander of BGB Battalion-18 said: “We heard that the couple had drowned in the river. We are investigating the matter.”
