A schoolgirl was reportedly gang-raped at Mahimaganj in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha early Monday.
Mehedi Hasan, officer-in-charge of Gobindaganj police station, said the girl, a tenth-grade student, had developed a love affair with one Shimul Miya.
Around 12am, the girl and Shimul eloped from their respective houses in a bid to get married.
When they reached Naobhanga village, five people including Enamul Haque, Rezaul Islam, Dhulu Mia, Sumon Miya, Saddam alias Sujon Kazi waylaid them and took them to a house forcibly.
Later, they raped the girl in turns after binding Shimul’s hands and feet.
Subsequently, the girl with her friend went to the local police station and informed the matter to the police leading to the arrest of the five people involved in the rape incident.
The girl has been sent to a local hospital for medical attention, said police.
