Owing to incessant rainfall in the last few days, the embankment area known as Dhaka-Narayanganj-Demra (DND) in Narayanganj has been inundated, causing immense sufferings for local residents.
The problem has added to the woes of residents who have already been battling the Covid-19 outbreak.
On a visit to the area yesterday, this correspondent found that the DND's Tagorpara, Isdair, Uttar Masdair, Gabtoli, Lalpur, Sastapur, Dakkhin Sasta pur, Jalkuri, Panchabati, Kurubpur, Kotalerbagh, Sehachar, Purbo Sehachar, Lal Kha, Lamapara and Siddirganj's Mijmijipara were inundated.
Thousands of people are now wading through waist-deep waters to travel to their destinations. Many people were seen using boats to commute within the urban areas.
Aggrieved residents of the areas said that many influential people had illegally grabbed canals inside the Dhaka-Narayanganj-Demra (DND) embankment and filled it up, which caused such waterlogging.
They also blamed the mismanagement of the drainage system and an unplanned city structure for the crisis. Meanwhile, the authorities said they were working to sort out the problem.
Tushar Ahmed, a resident of Fatullah's Lalpur Pousapukur, said, "Homes and roads get inundated in a slight to moderate rain. Those who live in the DND area have been suffering from waterlogging for years.
Regarding the problem, Ram Prasad Das, sub-assistant engineer of the DND pump house, Ram Prasad Das said: "We need to drain out around 3,200 cusecs of water per second to solve the waterlogging problem. But we are currently able to drain out only 889 cusecs of water."
