Awami League leader now threatens rape survivor to withdraw case

Earlier, a group of village arbitrators, led by Mostofa Siddiqi Liton fined the survivor of rape Tk125,000

A local Awami League (AL) leader who fined the survivor of rape Tk125,000 at Noita union under Mohammadpur upazila of Magura is now reportedly threatening the family of the rape survivor to withdraw the case filed against him.

The accused, Mostofa Siddiqi Liton, is the general secretary of  Mohammadpur upazila Awami League and the ex-chairman of Noita union council.

The girl's father said: "Monnu, an associate of Liton, asked ‘how many days will the police protect you? We will not spare you when the police stops providing security to your family.’

"We are living in fear after they threatened us," he  added. 

Regarding the issue, Magura Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Abir Siddiqi Shubra said that police were conducting drives to arrest Liton.

When asked about the accused Awami league leader’s threats to the girl's father, the ASP said police were providing necessary security to rape survivor's family.

Earlier, a group of village arbitrators, led by Mostofa Siddiqi Liton fined the survivor of rape Tk125,000.

They took away valuables, including goats, cows, and a bicycle belonging to the family, as the victim failed to pay the Tk125,000 they demanded.

Sources said Shahabul Islam, son of Shahidul Islam of Bhangura village, developed an affair with the girl who was  an eighth-grader. 

At one stage, the girl was raped by him. Later, she became pregnant from the incident.

On July, 10, the arbitrators of the village led by Mohammadpur upazila Awami League secretary and ex-chairman of Noita union council Mostofa Siddiqi Liton fined the victim Tk125,000 .

On July 16, the father of the girl filed a case against Shahabul who was later taken to jail following a court order, according to police.

He also filed an extortion case accusing 16 people including Mostofa Siddiqi Liton on Monday.

Local arbitrators, led by Mostofa Siddiqi Liton, later called on the victim’s uncle and tortured him for filing the case.
