Update : 01 Jun 2017, 08:53 PM
Bidi factory workers in Faridpur and Jamalpur districts Thursday organised several programmes under the banner of Bidi Sramik Federation protesting against the taxes proposed on tobacco products in the national budget. Our Faridpur correspondent reported that the agitated workers blocked Dhaka-Mawa-Khulna Highway at Bhanga, formed a human chain and staged a rally in the afternoon.Bidi-workers-protest_FaridpurAmong others, Md Mizanur Rahman, area manager of the federation, Md Liton Biswas, Hasanuzzaman, Rabiul Islam, Abdul Hamid, Ratan Mian and Palash spoke at the programme. Leaders of the federation alleged the finance minister had imposed excess taxes on tobacco products (45%) in the budget. The proposed taxes on bidi (handmade local cigarettes) would hamper women employment in the sector, they claimed. On the other hand, workers in Jamalpur staged a rally blocking Jamalpur-Mymensingh Highway in Feri Gaht area of the city over the same issue, our correspondent reported. They also placed five-point demands. Federation leader Nazim Uddin, Shakil Ahmed and Omar Faruk addressed the programme among others. The speakers termed the government’s decision to impose extra tax a conspiracy to destroy the bidi industry. Last month, bidi workers marched on Lalmonirhat-Burimari Highway with brooms protesting against the minister’s plans to shut down the bidi industry.
