Chittagong port fire doused after 17 hrs

It took a total of 15 fire-fighting vehicles to tame the flame

It has taken 17 hours of frantic effort to douse the massive fire that broke out at Chittagong port on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Chittagong Fire Service and Civil Defense, the blazing fire originated at shed number three of the maritime port at around 4pm on Wednesday.

It took a total of 15 fire-fighting vehicles to tame the flame.

Farid Ahmed Chowdhury, Deputy Assistant Director of Chittagong Fire Service and Civil Defense told Dhaka Tribune that the massive fire was finally put out at 9:10am on Thursday.

“The cause of the fire and the extent of damage are under investigation,” said the official, adding that a team comprising seven firefighting units has been kept standby at the spot as a precaution.

Meanwhile, Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has formed a five-member probe body, headed by Zafar Alam, Member (Administration and Planning) of the CPA, to determine the cause of the fire and the extent of damage.

The CPA Secretary Omark Faruk confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.

According to the CPA, goods like foam, chemical drums, plastic goods, battery, cosmetics, fabrics, machineries, papers, and soda meant for destruction were stockpiled at the shed number three of the port.
