Suspected pirate commander killed in Noakhali 'gunfight'

RAB seized six rifles and six rounds of bullets from the spot

A suspected pirate commander has been killed in an alleged gunfight with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in one of the remote chars of Hatia island early on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Md Bahar Uddin, 43, son of Shah Alam of Burirchar union under Hatia upazila.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jashim Uddin Chowdhury of RAB-11 said four other of the pirate's associates were arrested from the incident spot after the gunfight.

The arrested were: Md Yusuf, 35, Alauddin, 40, Md Murad, 30, and Md Shanto Sheikh, 20.

ASP Jashim said upon being tipped off that pirate commander Bahar with his gang was preparing for a robbery at Shurjamukhi Ghat area in Shunner Char village of Burirchar, RAB-11 conducted a raid there.

Realizing the presence of the law enforcers, members of the Bahar-gang opened fire, prompting RAB to fire back in self defense, the RAB officer further said.

Bahar was killed at one point during the gunfight. Four of his associates were detained and they were handed over to Hatia police station, added ASP Jashim.

RAB seized six rifles and six rounds of bullets from the spot.

Hatia police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Khayer said Md Bahar Uddin has two cases filed against him under the arms and robbery acts.
