Covid-19: Over 100,000 patients recover with recovery rate of 54.31% in Bangladesh

The country records 33 deaths, 3,163 new cases in 24hrs

More than a 100,000 people in all have so far recovered on Tuesday, with the gradual increase in patients recovering from Covid-19.

“4,910 patients successfully recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recovered patients in the country to 103,227,” said DGHS Additional Director General (Administration) Prof Dr Nasima Sultana.

She revealed the latest figures in a daily online bulletin on the Covid-19 pandemic on Tuesday.

The recovery rate in the country now stands at 54.31%.

Bangladesh recorded 33 deaths and 3,163 new cases of Covid-19 across the country in the last 24 hours.

With the new deaths, the total death toll from the pandemic in the country now stands at 2,424.

The total number of confirmed cases in the country now stands at 190,057.

Prof Nasima said that in the last 24 hours, 13,453 samples were tested across the country, of which 23.51% were found positive. 

Fatality rate 1.28%

Prof Nasima said of the 33 deceased – 23 men and 10 women – 13 were from Dhaka division, three from Chittagong, five each from Khulna and Sylhet Division, four from Rajshahi, two from Rangpur, and one from Barisal.

“Of the victims, 29 died in different hospitals and four passed away in their homes,” she added.

She said two of the deceased were below 40, four between 41 and 50, six between 51 and 60, nine between 61 and 70, 11 between 71 and 80, and one between 81 and 90 years of age.

So far, 1,913 men (78.92%) and 511 women (21.08%) have died from the deadly virus across the country since March 18, she said.

She added that the mortality rate was 1.28% against the total cases detected so far.

According to government data, individuals age 60 or above are the most vulnerable to Covid-19. 43.85% of people who have died of Covid infection so far are in that age group.

29.70% of deaths were between ages 51-60, 14.48% between 41-50, 7.05% between 31-40, 3.14% between 21-30, 1.16% between 11 and 20, and 0.62% were children below the age of 10 who have died since March 18.

23.51% test positive in 24hrs 

The DGHS official said as many as 13,988 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours.

13,453 samples were tested in 79 authorized labs, both government and private, across the country.

With 3,163 of the tests coming back positive, the detection rate of new patients in the last 24 hours stood at 23.51%. The average test positivity rate so far stood at 19.67%. Until yesterday, more than 9,66,400 tests have been conducted across the country.

Covid-19 dedicated hospitals

The covid dedicated hospitals in Dhaka city have 6,305 general beds and 142 ICU (Intensive Care Unit) beds. 

Of those, 2069 patients are admitted in general beds while the remaining 4,236 beds are vacant. 42 ICU beds are also vacant. 

In Chittagong city, there are 339 patients admitted to hospitals. 318 beds and 18 ICU units were vacant yesterday. 

The number of vacant beds across the country is 10,993 at covid dedicated hospitals. 

Covid-19 in Bangladesh so far

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The country reported its first fatality on March 18.

On June 10, Covid-19 deaths in Bangladesh crossed the 1,000 mark, and on June 18, the number of total cases crossed the 100,000 mark.

On June 30, the country recorded 64 deaths, which is the highest in a 24 hour span till now.

On July 2, 4,019 positive cases were recorded, which was the highest in a single day till now.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, turning into a pandemic in less than three months.
