A transport leader was stabbed to death by miscreants in the Dakshin Surma upazila of Sylhet on Friday night.
Iqbal Hossain Ripon (40), general secretary of Tank Lorry Workers Union Sylhet district unit, was stabbed around 10pm on Friday.
Police arrested two people in connection with the murder after a case was filed against 20 people by the victim's wife Farzana Akhter Toma. Altogether 13 people were named in the case.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khairul Fazal of Dakshin Surma police station under Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) confirmed the matter.
Transport workers barricaded different points of Dakshin Surma upazila protesting the murder until 2pm on Saturday.
The protest was called off after police and local political leaders discussed the matter with the protesters, according to a press release of the SMP.
Trucks and lorries were used to barricade Chandipul area and Humayan Rashid Chattar in Dakshin Surma, which are known as the entry points of Sylhet. Due to the demonstration no vehicles could move in and out of Sylhet.
When asked about the murder, OC Fazal said transport leader Ripon and some others were in front of Sitara Hotel at Babna point when the miscreants attacked and stabbed them.
They were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital soon after the incident where Ripon died an hour later, OC Fazal said.
Ripon's associate Babla Ahmed Talukdar was severely injured from the incident and is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.
