Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a woman in Madaripur Sadar upazila for her alleged involvement in human trafficking to Libya.
Sumi Begum, 33, was nabbed by a RAB 8 team from Srindihat, said Madaripur Camp Commander Additional SP Md Tajul Islam.
He said that RAB 8 gathered intelligence on an international crime ring involved in trafficking people to various European countries, including Italy.
The ring members are active in Bangladesh, Libya and Italy and their victims largely consisted of unemployed youths from lower to middle-income families, he added.
At first, they send youths to Libya. Then they take them hostage at unknown places there and demand ransom from their families here in Bangladesh. Whoever fails to pay the money faces torture, he said.
Additional SP Tajul said Sumi during preliminary interrogation, admitted she had ties to a human trafficking gang.
In May, human traffickers killed 30 migrant workers, including 26 Bangladeshi nationals in Libya, in a smuggling warehouse in Mizdah near the city of Gharyan, southwest of Tripoli.
Following the killings, Bangladesh started a crackdown on human traffickers here.
