Man jumps, drowns in Nagar River after BSF boat chase

The man used to work at a brick kiln after illegally crossing over to India through the river

Police on Tuesday recovered the body of a man from the Nagar River along the Dabri border area of Haripur upazila in Thakurgaon.

The deceased was identified as Raju Ahmed, 18, son of Ramij Uddin of Ruhia village in the upazila, confirmed Lt Col Shahidul Islam, commanding officer of BGB battalion 50.

Lt Col Shahidul Islam said: "The deceased Raju along with a few others used to work in a brick kiln in India’s Punjab after having crossed the border through the river route.

"On Sunday night, India's Border Security Force (BSF) chased their boat while they were returning from work. All of them jumped into the river. Others were able to swim ashore but Raju drowned as he didn't know how to swim."

On Tuesday, locals discovered Raju's body floating in the Geruadangi area of the river along the Dabri border. Being informed, police recovered the body.

Haripur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Amiruzzaman said the body was sent to Thakurgaon Adhunik Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. "The reason behind the death could be accurately stated after we receive the autopsy report."
