JCI Young distributes food relief to Daulatdia sex workers

With one meal a day, most are struggling to keep themselves alive amidst hunger and poverty

Update : 30 Jun 2020, 03:06 PM

JCI Dhaka Young of JCI Bangladesh has distributed food essentials to vulnerable sex workers in Dauladtia, Rajbari.

The essentials were distributed under the project titled “Manush Manusher Jonno” on June 27, according to a press release on Tuesday.

JCI Executive Vice President Nazmul Hossain Shobuz, General Legal Counsel Samia Rahman, with the help of the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Goalanda Police Station Ashikur Rahman, distributed the food packets to 230 sex workers in that area.

Each of the packets contained 10kg rice, 2kg lentils, 2kg flour, 1kg sugar, and 1litre oil.

Daulatdia hosts the largest brothel in Bangladesh and has been closed since March 2020 ever since Covid-19 hit Bangladesh, changing the plight of the sex workers for the worse.

As a result of the pandemic, sex workers in Bangladesh, like other informal sector workers, are experiencing hardships and severe loss of income.

Barely surviving with one meal a day, most of them struggled to keep their children and themselves alive amidst hunger and poverty.

The Project Lead and Vice President of the organization Sanzida Sharmine said: “The idea to organize and implement this project came to our mind after we saw several news in BBC and other media regarding the predicament of the disadvantaged sex workers in this difficult time.”
