A member of village police was beaten by a group of men, when he attempted to clear a fencing put illegally and was obstructing the entrance of a homeopath doctor's residence in Gopalganj.

The victim Amal Pandey, filed a case in this connection at Kotalipara police station on Sunday morning, confirmed the police station's OC Sheikh Lutfor Rahman.

Shurjakanta Mondal, the homeopath doctor, returned to his village home in Kalikabari of Kotalipara upazila about a week ago.

After his arrival, his neighbour Tarek Haldar put a fence obstructing one of the entrance of Shurjakanta's residence, said locals. Tarek reportedly suspected that Shurjakanta is infected with Covid-19.

Shurjakanta informed the matter to local Upazila Parishad (UP) Chairman Amrita Lal Haldar, who then sent the victim Amal at the spot to clear the fences.

Confirming, UP Chairman Amrita Lal said: "Amal was beaten when he went there," adding that other men were sent later who completed the job.

Tarek denied that he ordered his men to assault Amal and said the fence was put on his land.

Confirming that the village police member was beaten, Kotalipara police station OC Sheikh Lutfor Rahman said police will begin an investigation of the incident soon.
