Rajshahi University (RU) authorities suspended Prof Kazi Jahidur Rahman as he was accused in a case filed for defaming former health minister late Mohammad Nasim through Facebook posts.
Prof Jahidur's suspension is in effect from the day of his arrest on June 18, according to the decision taken at the 499th University Syndicate Meeting at the vice-chancellor's residence on Saturday.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, RU Prof Abdul Alim said: "As Jahidur is currently in jail, the decision has been taken by consulting the legal experts of the university. VC Prof M Abdus Sobhan chaired the meeting."
Kazi Jahidur Rahman, a teacher at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, was picked up by police from his home at around 2am on June 18.
The arrest was made after local Awami League leader Tapash Kumar Saha filed a case with the police late on Wednesday, according to Assistant Sub-Inspector Md Asaduzzaman from Rajshahi’s Motihar police station.
On the same day, police produced him before a Rajshahi court which sent him to jail.
