Belkuchi police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anwarul Islam was withdrawn from his duties in Sirajganj on Thursday for failing to prevent a mass gathering organized by the upazila unit Awami Jubo League which took place on Thursday.
The shockingly large gathering took place at a time when the government had banned all kind of public gatherings across the country in a bid to rein in the spread of Covid-19.
"Anwarul Islam was attached to district police lines upon the order of the Sirajganj Superintendent of Police Hasibul Alam,” said Bahauddin Faruki, newly appointed Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Belkuchi police station.
Belkuchi upazila Awami League Jubo League brought out a massive rally protesting an attack carried on the upazila unit Jubo League Convener Sazzadul Haque Reza on Thursday.
However, OC Anwarul did not take any action to stop the rally despite being informed of the rally beforehand, added the police official.
Regarding the matter, Belkuchi Upazila Nirbahi Officer (acting) Jahangir Alam said: "The organizers did not take any permission from the authorities to organize the rally. Anwarul Islam had the responsibility of preventing such a mass gathering but failed to do so."
