Accused in 11 cases, drug trader killed in 'gunfight'

Police conducted a drive in the area on Saturday midnight on information that a large drug trade will take place

A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Santhia upazila of Pabna on Sunday. 

The deceased, Abdus Sobhan, 48, was a drug trader and accused in 11 drug-related cases with various police stations. 

Pabna Police Super Sheikh Rafikul Islam said they conducted a drive near Karamja graveyard on information that drugs were being traded there. 

“When we reached the place, the drug traders opened fire on policemen, initiating a gunfight,” he said.

When the law enforcers retaliated, the criminals fled the spot leaving Sobhan severely injured, he said.

Later, Sobhan succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a local hospital, police said. 

Police also recovered a shotgun, one round bullet and two mobile phones from the spot.

“The body was sent to Pabna General Hospital for an autopsy,” said the official.
