Woman electrocuted in vain bid to save husband

People lose their lives and it is just an outcome of the many incidents caused by the whimsical and irresponsible attitude of WAPDA authorities, said vice-chairman of the upazila

A woman was electrocuted with her husband while she attempted to rescue him when he came in contact with a snapped livewire in a field of Mirzapur upazila of Tangail.

The incident took place when the deceased, Shahjahan Miah, 35, went to graze his cattle in a nearby field around 7:30am on Sunday in Abiram village of Bashtoil union of the upazila. 

The man got electrocuted by a snapped wire of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) and when his wife Elona Begum, 30, went to rescue him, both of them died on the spot, locals say.

Their 14-year-old son was also injured when he went to rescue the couple, witnesses say.

Azharul Islam, vice chairman of the upazila said: “People lose their lives and it is just an outcome of the many incidents caused by the whimsical and irresponsible attitude of WAPDA authorities.”

Confirming the incident, Bashtoil police outpost Sub-inspector Saiful Islam said: “We will hand over the dead bodies to the family following the legal procedure.”
