Accused in 10 cases killed in Gazipur ‘gunfight’

At one stage, Hanif was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries while the others managed to flee the scene

A suspected criminal has been killed in a reported gunfight with police at Habibpur in Gazipur's Kaliakair upazila.

The incident took place in the early hours of Thursday, confirmed Kaliakair police station Sub-inspector Mufti Mahmud.

The deceased, Mohammad Hanif, 30, son of Kanchan Shikdar of Shaheb Rampur of Kalkini upazila of Madaripur district, was accused in at least 10 cases over robbery, drugs and possessing illegal arms.

Police conducted a drive in the area around 3am, said Sub-inspector Mufti Mahmud, and the criminals opened fire on police, triggering a skirmish.

At one stage, Hanif was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries while the others managed to flee the scene.

Later, he was taken to Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead.

Hanif used to live at his in-law’s house in Kaliakoir and was wanted in 10 criminal cases, said the SI.

Four policemen were injured during the gunfight.

A one shotgun, one LG gun and three cartridges were recovered from the spot.
