A 29-year-old man died of severe breathing problems, also a symptom of coronavirus (Covid-19) infection, after he went door to door to different hospitals for treatment in Sirajganj upazila.
Shukur Ali passed away around 8pm on Thursday in his house in Bajrapur village of Sirajganj's Ullapara upazila.
He was a sales representative for a chemical company in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur district and comes from an impoverished family.
His brother Shahadat Ali, said: "My brother had been suffering from severe breathing problems since he came back home from Gazipur on Monday. He was taken to Ullapara Upazila Health Complex on Tuesday morning.
"Saying that there were no ventilation facilities, the hospital authority suggested we go to Bagbati Government Hospital designated for Covid-19 treatment. But when we reached that hospital they asked for a test report.
"After that we visited Shaheed M Monsur Ali Medical College hospital (in Sirajganj) to conduct a test but they informed us that they don't accept samples directly from patients. So I had to take my brother home, where he died without treatment," added Shahadat.
Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Anwar Hossain of Ullapara Upazila Health Complex said: "The patient's family did not disclose that he had symptoms similar to that of coronavirus when I was at the hospital in the morning (on Thursday)."
The district Civil Surgeon Dr Zahidul Islam said: "We were not informed that he went to different hospitals seeking treatment with coronavirus symptoms."
Ullapara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Arifuzzaman said: "For now, his house has been put under lock down, and we are trying to identify the people he came in contact with."
