ASI arrested after case filed against police over farmer’s death

An assistant sub-inspector of police and a local man have been arrested reportedly for the torture of a farmer that led to his eventual death.

A case has been filed by the victim’s brother Montu Talukdar and acting on his complaint, we arrested ASI Shamim Hasan from his home on Sunday night, said OC Sheikh Lutfar Rahman of the police station.

“The police officer--who was closed and attached to the regional police lines previously-- will be presented before the court on Monday,” added the officer.

Meanwhile, the incident was tried to be hushed up by local influentials by offers of Tk5 lakh and jobs to the deceased’s family, but they declined the offers and filed the case, confirmed plaintiff of the case, Montu Talukdar.

Earlier, on June 3, Nikhil Karmakar, a farmer, died while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) after being brutally beaten up by ASI Shahin.

The deceased, Nikhil-- a resident of Gopalganj’s Kotalipara-- was playing cards with his friends at the Ramshil Bazar when the incident took place on June 2, said Iti Karmakar, Nikhil's wife. 

According to her statement, Kotalipara police arrived on the scene when Nikhil and his friends were playing cards. As soon as the police arrived, his friends ran, leaving Nikhil apprehended by Assistant Sub Inspector Shamim Uddin.

ASI Shamim then beat Nikhil for playing cards and broke his spine in three places, which the test showed later. He was then taken to NITOR, where he died while undergoing treatment.
