Five police officers were accused of extorting around Tk1 lakh from a former Oman expatriate worker in Brahmanbaria's Akhaura upazila.
The former expat worker Harun Miya made a written complaint to the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Brahmanbaria, in which he alleged that the five officers took a total of Tk88,000, scaring him of framing a drug case against him and "putting him into crossfire."
The accused are: Sub-Inspector (SI) Motiur Rahman, SI Humayan Kabir, ASI Khorshed, all of Akhaura police station; plain clothed policeman Shohag and a female officer, unnamed in the complaint.
According to the complaint, Harun protested against the drug business of his neighbour Chikuni Begum, which prompted her to 'unleash' police at him.
On May 25, at 1:30am, the five accused officers conducted a search for narcotics in Harun's house while vandalizing furniture and assaulting him. They later took Tk38,000 from the house and left the spot.
The accused officers later came back the same day around 4pm and threatened Harun to frame a drug case against him and kill him if he did not pay Tk1 lakh. The matter was settled after Harun paid the police officers Tk50,000, more, according to details of the complaint filed.
Harun said: "I want justice for the incident I had to face. I have filed a written complaint to the SP, so that no one has to suffer a similar fate."
One of the accused SI, Motiur Rahman, denied the allegations against him when he was contacted over the phone.
Another accused SI Humayan Kabir said the allegations are false and he is being framed.
SP Anisur Rahman, to whom the complaint was filed, said necessary actions will be taken after an investigation into the matter.
