A Union Parishad (UP) chairman, accused in a case filed for his involvement in a murder, secured bail two days after he was arrested in Netrokona.

The accused is Mahboub Murshed Kanchan, chairman of Singdha union council of Barhatta upazila in Netrokona.

The victim is Marufa Akhter, 14, who worked as a househelp in the chairman's house in Netrokona's Mohongonj upazila.

On May 9, Marufa’s body was found hanging from a tree near the house where she worked, said locals.

On May 11, a murder case was filed against the UP chairman after which he was arrested and a Netrokona court sent him to jail.

Later, the court granted him bail until the framing of a charge sheet, according to police sources.

Meanwhile, family members of the victim expressed their resentment as the accused was able to secure bail within just two days of the arrest.

Aklima Akhter, the mother of the victim said: " We are poor so the law is not fair to us."

Abdul Ahad Khan, officer in-charge of Mohongonj police station, said: "We have arrested the accused within two hours after the victim's family filed the case. The victim's clothes were sent to Dhaka for DNA tests. We have not been negligent in dealing with the matter.”

SMA Ferdous, coordinating secretary of the Mohonganj upazila Awami League unit, also a nephew of the accused, said: "The murder case was filed to secure malicious political intent. A 70-year-old man (the UP chairman) cannot possibly commit such a crime as mentioned in the case."
