Fifteen monkeys were reportedly killed by unknown individuals who gave the monkeys food mixed with poison in Char Mugria of Madaripur.
The incident took place in ward 9 of the Sadar municipality on Tuesday.
In this regard, the forest department has filed a written complaint with the Sadar police station on Wednesday.
According to locals, some unknown young men fed the monkeys bananas, puffed rice and flat rice on Tuesday afternoon. Soon after, the monkey started bleeding from their mouths and dropped dead on the ground from the agony.
Madaripur Sadar police station OC Kamrul Islam said police recovered the dead monkeys for autopsy. “We have begun an investigation and will arrest those found to be involved with the death of these monkeys.”
Madaripur Forest Officer Taposh Kumar Sen Gupta said they have been proving food to monkeys living in Char Mugria during the coronavirus situation. “We will take legal actions against the people behind the killing of the monkeys.”
There is a long history of monkeys living in Char Mugria, much of which was forested. Although their population is said to have peaked at around 10,000, currently estimates range between 1500-2500.
